Spousal support, also known as alimony, is not a solid matter. No specific guidelines exist that clearly explain when it is to be provided or why. It is strictly in the hands of the judge who makes a determination based on a wide range of factors. Some of those factors include the length of marriage, the ability to move back into the workforce, health issues, commingled property, marital and nonmarital assets, and the incomes of both parties.

Spousal support comes in essentially two variations: temporary and permanent. Temporary support is typically granted to those who have the ability to move back into the workforce but may need some time to do it. Permanent support is typically given to those who may not be able to get a job that provides them the income to maintain their quality of life.

Since these matters are often entirely at the discretion of the judge, we believe it is important to know the judge. Our years of dedication to family law have allowed us to become acquainted with the area's judges. We understand their tendencies and their habits. We know how to take these factors into consideration when we are building your case.

From the initial spousal support decision to any postdivorce modifications that need to be made down the line, we are here for you.

We encourage you to e-mail us or call us at 770.218.2600 to speak with a dedicated spousal support lawyer.
