What Is a Guardian ad Litem?
In custody cases, the courts will often appoint a third attorney to act as a Guardian ad Litem for the children. This lawyer does not represent the children as a client, but represents the best interests of the children when the court is determining custody, visitation and parenting plans. The Guardian ad Litem will investigate the situation, interview teachers, physicians, psychologists and conduct psychological evaluations and custodial evaluations (when necessary) to help the courts determine which parent is better suited for custody.
Attorney Marian Weeks is a highly experienced Guardian ad Litem. As the Guardian, she has attended depositions, motions, hearings, mediation and more. She understands what information the courts are seeking and how to make recommendations based on the best interests of the child. With more than 20 years of experience in this area, she is one of the top three most frequently used Guardian ad Litems in northern Georgia and has on occasion been the instructor of the Guardian ad Litem certification course.
