Child Support Worksheets — What Do I Need to Know?

Georgia now has what is called income-sharing when determining child support. The child support worksheet is prepared with a state program on the computer with help from your lawyer. While the basic child support amounts are determined by the state, it is important to work with an experienced family law attorney. An experienced family lawyer will know how to consider what should be included in all income sources, and deviations in determining the final amount. The courts will take into consideration income and costs including:

  • Salary
  • Bonuses and overtime
  • Inheritance
  • Rental income
  • Day care costs
  • Extracurricular activities
  • Special educational needs
  • Medical needs
  • Any other form of income from other sources

The court will also consider how many children support is being paid for, including children from a previous marriage or family. The costs for medical, dental, extracurricular activities and more will be divided based on income-sharing figures. Once the child support worksheet is finalized, it will be included in the final order. If a modification of child support is needed in the future, a new child support worksheet will be prepared to include the updated incomes and costs.
